چکیده

Let f : Sn → Rk be a continuous map where Sn is the unit n-sphere. Then there exists a point z ∈ Rk such that the spherical n-volumes of the ε-neighbours of the level Yz = f−1(z) ⊂ Sn, denoted Yz + ε ⊂ Sn, satisfy Vol(Yz + ε) ≥ Vol(Sn−k + ε) ( )Sn for all ε > 0, where Sn−k ⊂ Sn denotes an equatorial (n− k)-sphere. This is proven in §5.9. Remarks. (a) If k = n, and card f−1(z) ≤ 2, z ∈ Rn, then ( )Sn applied to ε = π/2 amounts to the Borsuk–Ulam theorem: some level f−1(z) of f : Sn → Rk equals a pair of opposite points. Not surprisingly, our argument in the general case depends on Z2-cohomological considerations. (b) If k = 1 one may take the Levy mean of f for z ∈ R, where the level f−1(z) ⊂ Sn divides the sphere into equal halves (i.e. where Vol(f−1(−∞, z]) and Vol(f−1[z,∞)) are both ≥ 12 Vol(Sn)). Then ( )SN follows from the spherical isoperimetric inequality (see 9.2.B). (c) The inequality ( )Sn for ε → 0 shows that the Minkowski m-volume of f−1(z) for m = n − k is ≥ than that of the equatorial sphere Sm ⊂ Sn. Yet, it remains unclear if some level of f has the Hausdorff measure ≥ Volm(S). (If f is a generic smooth map, a level with Haumesm ≥ Volm(S) is delivered by the Almgren–Morse theory, see [Gr5].)

Isoperimetry of waists and local versus global asymptotic convex geometries

If two symmetric convex bodies K and L both have nicely bounded sections, then the intersection of random rotations of K and L is also nicely bounded. For L being a subspace, this main result immediately yields the unexpected “existence vs. prevalence” phenomenon: If K has one nicely bounded section, then most sections of K are nicely bounded. The main result represents a new connection between...

Singularities, Expanders and Topology of Maps. Part 2: from Combinatorics to Topology via Algebraic Isoperimetry

We find lower bounds on the topology of the fibers F−1(y) ⊂ X of continuous maps F : X → Y in terms of combinatorial invariants of certain polyhedra and/or of the cohomology algebras H∗(X). Our exposition is conceptually related to but essentially independent of Part 1 of the paper.

On the role of Convexity in Isoperimetry, Spectral Gap and Concentration

We show that for convex domains in Euclidean space, Cheeger’s isoperimetric inequality, spectral gap of the Neumann Laplacian, exponential concentration of Lipschitz functions, and the a-priori weakest requirement that Lipschitz functions have arbitrarily slow uniform tail-decay, are all quantitatively equivalent (to within universal constants, independent of the dimension). This substantially ...

The Limit of Convexity Based Isoperimetry: Sampling Harmonic-Concave Functions

Logconcave functions represent the current frontier of efficient algorithms for sampling, optimization and integration in Rn [LV06a]. Efficient sampling algorithms to sample according to a probability density (to which the other two problems can be reduced) relies on good isoperimetry which is known to hold for arbitrary logconcave densities. In this paper, we extend this frontier in two ways: ...

Isoperimetry and Symmetrization for Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities

Using isoperimetry and symmetrization we provide a unified framework to study the classical and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. In particular, we obtain new Gaussian symmetrization inequalities and connect them with logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Our methods are very general and can be easily adapted to more general contexts.
